Timing belts/Cambelts and Timing Chains control the engine valve cycle sequence to ensure correct fuel combustion timing and compression. It basically keeps all the engine components running at the right time
If the belt or chain skips or snaps it causes pistons and valves to interfere or make contact with each other and can cause a lot of damage to the engine its self. Piston and valve damage requires an engine rebuild with new pistons and valves.
This makes a timing belt one of the most important things to be serviced on your car. Like all components, they wear and tear. And if it is left too late, it can make things much more expensive then they need to be.
Here’s how to find out if your car requires a new timing belt or timing chain
- Check your cars hand book or service book, most manufacturers recommend it to be changed after a certain Mileage or Age e.g. after 70000 miles or 10 years of the cars first use.
- Has any chemicals spilt around the timing belt, or has the belt had accidental damage to it, a damaged or contaminated belt is highly recommended to be changed
